We’ve recently been made more aware of the benefits of having berry bushes.
Like elderberry that has always been a staple in our area- it also had been an ingredient in many cough syrups. Blueberries and other berry plants are so good for us and there has been a lot of talk about using our landscaping to be beneficial- not just looking good.
Sometimes we plant things and then find ourselves slaving to keep them healthy . Are we not better to plant what naturally thrives without a lot of effort on our part?
When an opportunity arose to get in on an order being made- we put our name in for two blueberry bushes.
We have an area that our lawn people don’t mow and leave for me to keep tame. It is in full sun and we figured it would be a perfect spot.
I had dug out and down into the hardpacked clay soil and added some composted soil and peat moss. I also made up a small bed to hold it all.
We got our two bushes – you need two different ones for pollenation- and got them planted this past Thanksgiving weekend.
Now we’ll look forward to spring and see how well they do.
